My 3 year old is very tall so I ordered him the size 5; a little big in the waist for him but they stay on. The drawstring works. I would definitely recommend sizing up if your child is in between sizes or you want this swimsuit to last potentially for 2 seasons. I did not think the material was stiff. I would have loved if the matching shirt was full length sleeves.
